Home Schooling
We have become obsessed with the idea that children must learn. Subjects, tests, benchmarks, progress, grades, awards, pressure … these words have become synonymous with childhood.
Before a child has a chance to start exploring their uniqueness and who they really are, they’re in school gathered into groups and being asked to spend 13 years walking along the same path as everyone else.
In the end, they will pretty much become who they have been asked to become. For many, that spark of individuality that was ready to ignite in childhood will be all but extinguished.
The education system is linear and it makes it really difficult for a child to explore other paths.
The true essence of childhood is not learning, it is becoming.
Society and the media tend to speak negatively of children who are not in school. The UK government has even gone as far as threatening parents with fines and prosecution if their children were absent without prior authorisation.
If your children weren’t learning at a recognised educational establishment, people would frown upon it as bad parenting. As children ourselves, we went to school and the same for our parents when they were children. Surely there is no other way to learn as children unless you are in a classroom with a qualified teacher??
Homeschooling has always been around but now it has come out of the shadows and is fast growing. That pace has been further accelerated by Covid.
No one was ready for what Covid would bring. Thousands of schools shut. Millions of children staying at home and now the parent was being asked to do what qualified teachers do!
Myself and Dionne realised that our children respond more positively to learning when it is not forced. Their personalities compliment a learning path that encourages the freedom to express themselves. It’s an amazing feeling seeing your children asking for their curiosity to be fed. Having the freedom to choose their own learning topics and slowly become the best versions of themselves. Add in some global travel and the world is your oyster for educating your kids!
